Iowa Congressman David Young voted in favor of H.R. 3033 -- the Research Excellence and Advancements for Dyslexia or the READ Act. A cosponsor of the legislation, Congressman Young was thrilled it passed with overwhelming bipartisan support.

Congressman Young said, "One of our greatest responsibilities is preparing our kids for the future. And when you have 8.5 million kids nationwide struggling to read a story, spell words, learn new vocabulary, or pronounce words accurately, we've got to step up and help out.

"Back in September I met with Decoding Dyslexia Iowa -- a great group that runs a dyslexia-inspired education center in West Des Moines. These groups provide a critical support service for our kids with dyslexia, but here in Congress we need to get in the game. The READ Act will help these capable, yet frustrated kids, regain their confidence and reach their potential," Young continued.

The READ Act would direct the National Science Foundation to research ways to identify kids with dyslexia at an earlier age and get them the support they need. The legislation would also focus on identifying methods that best train teachers and creating curriculum that meets kids' needs.
