Congresswoman Marcia Fudge Statement on the 50th Anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid

Statement

Date: July 30, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) released the following statement to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid:

"Medicare and Medicaid have helped keep Americans healthy for 50 years. Since 1965, these programs have saved lives, making quality health care more affordable for individuals and families who otherwise may not be able to pay for it. Ohio enrollment in Medicare and Medicaid is high. Approximately 17 percent of Ohioans are enrolled in Medicare, 19 percent in Medicaid and 3 percent in both.

"Despite the success of these programs, Medicare and Medicaid continue to be under attack. The Republican Budget, passed earlier this year, threatens these essential programs by privatizing Medicare, turning Medicaid into state block grants and shifting many health care costs to beneficiaries.

"As we commemorate this anniversary, we must recommit ourselves to the people the programs were designed to protect: seniors, children, the poor and the disabled. Let's work together to strengthen Medicare and Medicaid and improve health outcomes for all."
