Bonamici Statement on Advancing Long-Term Multi-Modal Transportation Bill

Statement

Date: Nov. 5, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01) made the following statement after the House voted to advance a six year extension of legislation that authorizes federal highway, public transit, highway safety, and other safety programs. The bill now heads to negotiations with the Senate to finalize the bill.

"When we make long-term investments in transportation and infrastructure, we stimulate the economy, create jobs, and help drive commerce," said Congresswoman Bonamici. "The extension advanced by the House today will go a long way to updating and modernizing the country's and Northwest Oregon's transportation systems. As we work on the a final bill, I will push for sustained, long-term funding needed to build and maintain our roads and bridges and strengthen freight rail and public transit services.

"I am pleased that my amendment to designate the Newberg Dundee Bypass Route as a high priority corridor was included. This has the potential to ease congestion for Yamhill County residents and visitors, as well as make it easier for wine and agricultural industries to move their goods to market. Additionally, the six-year bill gives Oregon and local counties the certainty they need to start new construction projects and create comprehensive transportation plans.

"Additionally, I joined a large majority of my colleagues in standing up to another attack on the Export-Import Bank. It's unfortunate that, once again, a vocal minority attempted to prevent small businesses from competing in overseas markets by trying to include anti-Export Import Bank provisions in the transportation bill. The Ex-Im Bank pays for itself and plays a crucial role in helping Oregon companies export their goods to overseas.

"Finally, I am grateful for the bipartisan effort on this transportation legislation, much of it under the leadership of Ranking Member Peter DeFazio. These efforts will bring us closer to reaching a solution that will support a growing economy."
