Today, the Energy and Commerce Committee's Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade held a hearing to continue efforts to ensure automotive safety. Members discussed legislation designed to protect consumers and whistleblowers within the industry.

"In light of recent safety lapses in the automotive industry, it is crucial we do our part to provide a level of confidence to our nation's consumers that the vehicles they utilize are safe," said Congressman Bilirakis. "This legislation will help make it easier for whistleblowers to come forward to ensure the industry can respond to any safety lapses in a timely manner."

The Motor Vehicle Safety Whistleblower Act will incentivize employees and contractors to come forward with safety issues. During the committee's investigation, it became apparent some safety issues were evident, yet ignored. This bill would provide additional protections from possible recourse and retaliation for whistleblowers who are simply trying to do the right thing.

The Improving Recall Tracking Act will make it easier to find recall information about specific vehicles by establishing a national vehicle database. There are currently 50 different state systems to notify consumers of safety issues, this has led to delays in consumer notification. This legislation promotes a stronger coordinated effort between the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and automobile manufacturers.

"Safety is and always will be a top priority and consumer notification is key when dealing with safety recalls," added Bilirakis. "A number of Floridians were tragically killed or seriously injured due to the recent Takata airbag defect. It is my hope that the committee's efforts will help ensure that such tragedies are prevented in the future."
