Rokita Continues Fight for Student Choice

Statement

Date: Feb. 3, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education Chairman Todd Rokita, participated in a full Education & the Workforce committee hearing on school choice.

"We know that when parents have a choice, kids have a chance. School choice is an important step in helping children access a quality education. Today's hearing allowed Congress to hear about the success stories from states, researchers, and students. We have an obligation to continue to empower parents and students and the best way to do that is to recognize that a one-size-fits all solution does not work on this issue, instead we should work on expanding the choices that families have. Public, private, charter, and parochial schools are all part of a larger network of education choices that families should have access to.

"This hearing builds on the Committee's recent legislative success. Through the Every Student Succeeds Act, which started with my education subcommittee four years ago and ended on the President's desk a few weeks ago, we just handed states, including Indiana, what the Wall Street Journal called "the largest devolution of federal control to the states in 25 years.'," said Rokita.

Last year, the Every Student Succeeds Act was signed into law. Representative Rokita served on the conference committee that negotiated the final bill. The Every Student Succeeds Act replaced No Child Left Behind and expanded access to charter schools.
