Young Presses USDA on Need to Strengthen Agriculture Economy

Press Release

Date: Feb. 11, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Iowa Congressman David Young pressed U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack on the USDA's efforts to improve and renew strength in our agriculture economy. The exchange took place in a hearing to examine the federal budget held by the U.S. House Appropriations Committee Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies.

The Congressman highlighted some of the issues facing rural communities and said, "Cash inputs are up, even though oil prices are down and fuel prices, commodities are low, even though we've had just some record yields from corn and beans. Regulations I hear are squeezing the farmers..."

"So my question really is, what do you see happening out there in the agriculture economy?" the Congressman added, "Is this a short term situation - long term? And how can we foster an economy to improve and renew strength in our agriculture economy?"
