Fleming Supports SAFE Act To Protect Americans

Statement

Date: Nov. 19, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman John Fleming, M.D. released the following statement after voting in favor of H.R. 4038, the American Security Against Foreign Enemies (SAFE) Act, which pauses the resettlement of Syrian and Iraqi refugees until there's an appropriate security certification process in place.

"Despite what the President may say, the horrific terrorist attacks in Paris and Beirut last week and the homemade bomb that recently took out a civilian Russian airliner reinforce the fact that ISIS is not contained. The reality is that this despicable terrorist organization is willing to go to great lengths, including infiltrating the refugee community, to sabotage any country that disagrees with their radical agenda.

"Today's vote signifies the need to distinguish between refugees seeking resettlement and terrorists seeking destruction. By greatly strengthening the refugee vetting process by involving the FBI--currently bypassed, relying largely on U.N. information-- we can ensure genuine support for those truly in need, while also judiciously protecting American lives."
