Fleming: Report Shows Taliban Swap Misleading and Illegal

Congressman John Fleming, M.D. released the following statement after the House Armed Services Committee, in which Rep Fleming is a member, released its findings on the release of five high-level Taliban terrorists from Guantanamo Bay in exchange for Sgt. Bergdahl in 2014:

"President Obama's decision to swap five battle-hardened Taliban terrorists for Sgt. Bergdahl not only made the world a more dangerous place, but, as we have learned from the Committee's report, was also illegal. By intentionally misleading Congress and the American people on the status of a proposed swap, the Administration blatantly broke laws requiring Congressional notification. Even though these particular detainees were deemed 'too dangerous to transfer' by the Administration's own officials, the President quietly released these individuals to achieve his own political goals of unilaterally closing Guantanamo Bay."
