Congressman John Fleming, M.D. released the following statement after joining as an original co-sponsor of a bill introduced by Rep. Chris Gibson (R-NY) and Mike Turner (R-OH) to end troop cuts for the Army and Marine Corps:

"Over the years, President Obama has managed to make devastating cuts to our military, including a reduction of nearly 100,000 Army Active-duty soldiers. Just a few days ago, the President proposed cutting the Army even further and funding our military at $15-23 billion less than what is should be. With ISIS conducting terrorist attacks against the U.S. homeland and Russia, China, Iran and North Korea all threatening our allies, the President's dismantling of our Army creates an unacceptable risk to our national security.

"Since downsizing began, I have been proud to successfully stand with Fort Polk in preventing some of the major reductions that other Army bases have suffered. Last year, I included legislation in the National Defense Authorization Act to require the Department of Defense to justify these harmful reductions being made at Fort Polk and across the country. I join my colleagues in co-sponsoring this bill that will finally put an end to the President's cuts to our military that threaten Fort Polk and jeopardize the security of the American people. The President has failed to keep our nation safe and it is now up to Congress to ensure we have the military needed to challenge our adversaries."
