Chairman Becerra Statement on Equal Pay Day

Statement

Date: April 12, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Democratic Caucus Chairman Xavier Becerra (CA-34) released the following statement to mark Equal Pay Day:

"Equal work deserves equal pay. No person who works as hard as his or her colleagues should be paid less because of gender. Yet that's the reality for women in this country, who make 79 cents to every man's dollar. It's not just ridiculous that women working full-time earn less than their male counterparts -- it's harmful to working families who rely on women's income and to the health of our economy.

"The math is even worse for women of color: African American women earn on average 63 cents to the dollar and Latinas earn 54 cents. As a father, a brother, and a husband, I know we need to do better. This April 12th, I call on my colleagues in Congress to address the gender pay gap and pass the Paycheck Fairness Act so that all women in this country are paid equally for a hard day's work."
