Blumenthal Statement on Featuring Harriet Tubman on $20 Bill in 2030

Statement

Date: April 20, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) today made the following statement in response to the Department of Treasury's announcement that it will feature Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill by 2030.

"Harriet Tubman is the right face for the $20 bill --without waiting until 2030. This decision is commendable, but the delay unacceptable. A woman on paper currency is already long overdue and way too late by 2030. Harriet Tubman hopefully will be followed by other distinguished women who symbolize the lifetime accomplishments, economic power and professional distinction of so many women. The diversity of our currency should reflect the diversity of our country. Women and African Americans have made immense and enduring contributions to our nation, and they deserve this meaningful recognition -- rightly and right now."
