Statement from Governor Hassan on Senate Action on "Conversion Therapy" Bill

Press Release

Date: May 12, 2016
Location: Concord, NH

Governor Maggie Hassan issued the following statement today after the New Hampshire State Senate failed to pass House Bill 1661, relative to conversion therapy seeking to change a person's sexual orientation:

"I am disappointed that the Senate today voted against a bipartisan measure from the House of Representatives that would have banned the harmful and scientifically unsound practice of conversion therapy on minors. A wide-range of medical and mental health organizations have concluded that this practice is dangerous for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth, and failing to pass this legislation further advances the false premise that LGBT individuals need to be cured, or that their sexual orientation or gender identity is somehow a choice. We must continue work to stand up for our children, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, and ensure that all of our citizens are fully included and protected."
