Under Senator Berger's leadership, North Carolina's tax rates quickly fell from the highest in the Southeast to some of the most competitive in the region. The largest tax cut and reform since the 1930s is providing relief for families and businesses alike.

Guided by the belief that the citizens and job creators of North Carolina know how to spend their money better than state government and bureaucrats in Raleigh, Senator Berger ushered the largest tax cut and reform since the 1930s through the General Assembly in 2013.

North Carolina's tax rates quickly fell from the highest in the Southeast to some of the most competitive in the region, providing relief for families and businesses alike. The tax cuts, passed by Supermajorities in the House and Senate and signed by Governor McCrory, cut the personal income tax from a high of 7.75% to a flat 5.75%, giving every working family more take-home pay. It also cut taxes on businesses, and moved North Carolina from 44th to 16th best business tax climate in the nation, according to the nonpartisan Tax Foundation.

In 2011, the House and Senate overrode Gov. Beverly Perdue's vetoes to cut the sales tax by $1 billion dollars, and cut taxes on small businesses.
