Explaining My Vote on Traffic Cameras

Statement

Date: March 28, 2016
Issues: Transportation

Earlier this month I supported HB 436. I knew that when I cast my vote there would be some people who were surprised because in the past I have voted to repeal speed cameras.

Unfortunately, this bill put all traffic cameras together, meaning it affected work zone cameras as well as red light and speed cameras. Even though I support repealing speed cameras and red light cameras, I felt it was my duty to keep our highway construction workers safe.

In 2013, eight people died in Maryland in work zone crashes, and five of those people were highway construction workers. Nationwide, 700 people die annually in work zone accidents.

As a small business owner in the construction industry, I know the dangers that highway construction workers face while working on our roads. And as a wife, a mother, and a grandmother, I can't begin to imagine the pain of losing someone you love.

If an opportunity arises for me to repeal speed cameras that would not impact work zone cameras, I can assure you that I will vote to repeal them.
