Rokita Discusses Congress's "Power Of The Purse"

Statement

Today, Rep. Todd Rokita helped lead a House Budget Committee hearing focused on reestablishing Congress's "power of the purse.' Rep. Rokita serves as the Vice Chairman of the House Budget Committee.

"Our Constitution lays out clear roles and boundaries for all three branches of our government. Unfortunately, recent actions by the President and courts have put that separation of powers in jeopardy. Today's hearing laid out a pathway back to these checks and balances, which includes addressing the mandatory spending not subjected to Congressional approval. This spending on entitlement programs not only deprives Hoosiers of having a say through their elected representatives, but also represents the biggest driver of our irresponsible national debt," said Rep. Rokita.

Today's hearing featured Philip G. Joyce, Ph.D. of University of Maryland, Matthew C. Spalding, Ph.D. of Hillsdale College's Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship, and Stan Collender of Qorvis MSLGROUP as witnesses.
