Becerra:"Inaction Is a Choice and in Congress, It Has Proved Harmful"

Statement

House Democratic Caucus Chairman Xavier Becerra (CA-34) released the following statement on yesterday's mass shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando:

"This is a solemn time. This weekend's mass shooting inside a Florida nightclub was another senseless act of gun violence.

"I offer my prayers to the victims and families in Orlando.

"We learned that 50 people were killed and 53 injured, making this the worse mass shooting in American history. President Obama has called it "an act of terror and an act of hate" that struck at the heart of the LGBT community and all Americans.

"All of us as Americans, especially those of us in positions of leadership, must do what we can to prevent these mass shootings.

"We must do a better job of identifying and checking the background of those who seek to buy weapons, especially assault weapons. We must do a better job of responding to the red flags exhibited by people who are on the edge and manifesting signs of fanatic extremism or severe psychological strain.

"But what we shouldn't do is simply bow our heads for a moment of silence. We must be smart, serious and determined in this fight for our safety. We must act where we know we can.

"Inaction is a choice and in Congress, it has proved harmful. It's time to act."
