In a shameless assertion straight out of Ripley's Believe It or Not!, Soft-on-Terror Tea Party Rep. Scott Garrett now says he supports "banning terrorists, criminals, and the mentally ill from obtaining weapons" despite voting more than a dozen times to block "No Fly, No Buy" legislation banning ISIS-inspired terrorists from purchasing assault weapons.

"As Ronald Reagan said, facts are stubborn things and if you look at Garrett's lifelong record, the only thing that's factual is that Scott Garrett is soft on terror," said Josh Gottheimer, candidate for Congress in the 5th District.

Garrett Says: "I completely support banning terrorists, criminals, and the mentally ill from obtaining weapons."

Fact: Garrett Voted 13 times to allow ISIS-inspired terrorists to purchase assault weapons, including hours after the terrorist attack in Orlando. Garrett blocked "No Fly, No Buy" legislation that would have banned anyone on the FBI Terror Watch List from purchasing assault weapons like the AR-15 used in Orlando and San Bernardino.

Garrett Says: "I support increased funding for efforts that could have prevented the tragedy in Orlando, like law enforcement and intelligence resources to fight terrorism, and ensuring the FBI's terrorist watch list is being properly utilized."

Fact: Garrett has repeatedly voted against critical resources for local law enforcement, 9/11 first responders, and homeland security, to protect our communities and make it harder for terrorists to attack American citizens.

Voted 12 times against COPS grants that would put more police officers on the streets. He even refused to apply for existing COPS grants for police departments in the Fifth District, Rep. Pascrell had to do it.

Voted to slash essential firefighters grants that give our first responders the tools and training they need to respond to terrorist attacks. He also refused to apply for already allocated SAFER grants to fire stations in Paramus and Oradell.

Supported a shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security, which included funding to fight ISIS-inspired lone wolf terrorists. Garrett was the only member of the New Jersey congressional delegation to vote in favor of a shutdown.

Repeatedly voted against prosthetics, job training, and PTSD counseling for America's veterans when they return from fighting terrorists overseas.

Refused to install secondary barriers on airplanes that would stop terrorists from charging into cockpits. Captain Rob Domaleski, chairman of the Legislative Committee for the 12,000 member United Pilots Master Executive Council, called Garrett "weak on terror" for his opposition to these extremely effective barriers.

Voted to let our law enforcement, firefighters, and EMTs go it alone after responding to 9/11. Garrett twice voted against the Zadroga Act, which would provide health care to the thousands of first responders who are sick after spending months on the Pile after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
