Ahead of Warsaw Summit, Reps. Young and Kinzinger call for coordinated NATO campaign against ISIS

Press Release

Date: July 7, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Congressmen Todd Young (R-IN) and Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) introduced H. Res. 814, which calls for invocation of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty to set in motion a coordinated, coalition-based campaign against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Rep. Young served as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Marine Corps and Rep. Kinzinger served in the U.S. Air Force in Iraq and Afghanistan and currently serves as a pilot in the Air National Guard. Both are former members of the House Armed Services Committee.

"ISIS has co-opted and inspired mass casualty attacks against the United States and our allies, and rabidly seeks to incite more bloodshed. Were it your son in Orlando, your spouse in San Bernardino, or your family member murdered at the airports in Brussels or Istanbul, you too would demand more from your government. The time has come to strategically deploy all instruments of national power to protect our citizens from human suffering and depravity. We must coordinate a coalition-based offensive, and bring to bear all of NATO's military, diplomatic, and economic power to destroy ISIS. I hope to see Article 5 invoked immediately. It is one of only a few viable options that can provide President Obama the sufficient political cover one senses he needs to let American military leaders take over and reformulate our weak defensive posture into a winning strategy." --Congressman Todd Young (R-IN)

"Time and again, we have seen the barbarism of ISIS take innocent lives. Their hateful, spiteful, radical ideology goes against all that NATO represents. As allies, we must stand together to defeat this horrific cancer that continues to strike and plague our country and our people. We cannot let this barbarism overtake our humanity, our way of life, our core principles. I'm proud to be an original cosponsor to Rep. Todd Young's resolution and I look forward to garnering even more support from our colleagues." -- Congressman Adam Kinzinger (R-IL)

Background on Young's legislation: A resolution calling on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to invoke Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty to conduct a military campaign against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

The building presence of ISIS across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia has exacerbated the refugee crisis. As witnessed in France, Belgium, the United States, Lebanon, Egypt, Bangladesh, and Turkey, the terror group's ability to co-opt attacks targeting Westerners presents a growing security threat NATO members must address.
