Congressman Fleming Responds to Ryan "Ugliness" in Politics Remarks

Statement

Congressman John Fleming (R-LA) issued the following statement in response to Speaker Paul Ryan's (R-WI) address on the state of American politics.

"Speaker Ryan is correct, we have seen a degrading in American politics, but what he missed today is that at the core of the problems are elected officials who fail to respond to the concerns of the people. Americans are rightly angry that Republicans and Democrats alike are failing to respond to the economic, cultural, and security decay that are plaguing us daily."

"Hardworking Americans are seeing their jobs shipped overseas and they are left to work two and even three jobs just to make ends meet. They see a culture in decay that glorifies violence and values that eat at the core of who we are as a people. And they see radical Islamic terror attacking us and our allies, and a government unwilling to even call it by name. Barack Obama has been a failure, but Republican Leadership is also to be blamed for refusing to confront many of these problems."

"In my time in Congress, I have worked to be a voice of my constituents and if we hope to avoid a further political circus, we need to be responsive to these problems. We cannot dictate from Washington, but instead we must be a voice for those thousands of miles away from the DC Beltway echo-chamber. People are disheartened, and it is up to us to govern as we have campaigned," concluded Dr. Fleming.
