Business, science, history and agriculture were all on the agenda for U.S. Senator Jerry Moran as he toured Emporia High School on Friday.

With students from various programs guiding the way, Moran, along with State Sen. Jeff Longbine, visited classrooms, held question-and-answer sessions with students and learned about the opportunities available for students at EHS. Moran praised the students and teachers with whom he visited, adding that a focus on vocational education made EHS stand out from other districts he has visited.

"I also saw a focus on vocational and technical education and on career development," Moran said. "That's something that's slightly different from other schools I've visited. It really seems to me that this school is trying to find ways to make sure that students are successes as they leave Emporia High School."

Moran said most of the work for Kansas public school districts is done at the state and local level, but he added he remains committed to supporting education.

"The decisions we make matter more to the next generation -- these kids -- than they do to adults today," he said. "I don't want to lose touch with what kids are thinking and feeling and the circumstances they are facing in their lives."
