Location: Washington, DC

Iowa Congressman David Young brought together 130 high school student leaders from across the Third Congressional District for his annual Youth Leadership Summit yesterday, a daylong summit at the Iowa State Capitol filled with networking and leadership training events.

Congressman Young welcomed the group with introductory remarks, and the students took part in ice-breaker exercises and participated in informative educational sessions facilitated by educators from the University of Northern Iowa's (UNI) Classic Upward Bound Program.

"Our students are Iowa's future leaders, but they are also leaders now," Congressman Young said. "I always appreciate opportunities to meet with and listen to so many of Iowa's young leaders, and I am pleased to facilitate this summit each year to provide them with additional resources and tools for success."

Zack Mannheimer, Vice President of Creative Placemaking at Iowa Business Growth, addressed students as this year's keynote speaker. A young entrepreneur and Des Moines local, Zack previously served as the Executive Director of the Des Moines Social Club.

The Youth Leadership Summit was started by former Congressman Tom Latham in 2007 with a goal of empowering Iowa's youth to interact with their government, but also to help mentor the next generation of Iowa's leaders as they look to, and prepare for, their futures. Congressman Young has made it a priority to continue this yearly event so students are able to take advantage of this important resource.
