Helping People by Dragging Down Others Is Not the American Way

Friend,

Rarely a day passes without a frustrated Iowan showing me cancellation letters from their insurance plans, or bills depicting how their monthly insurance premiums now match the same monthly cost of their mortgage payments. This sentiment - how the Affordable Care Act (ACA) health care law is failing folks - is echoed in many of the letters, emails and phone calls I receive.

Unfortunately, the administration has recently confirmed that the cost of health insurance will rise 30.1 percent on average in Iowa in 2017. This news of rising health care costs is tragic for many of the folks in communities I visit throughout the Third Congressional District - and continues to provide uncertainty to families and businesses in Iowa and across the nation.

There is no doubt that the ACA law - referred to by many as Obamacare - has helped people. But no law can be considered a success when it helps some people by punishing and creating hardships and pain on others. That isn't America.

It is evident the current one-size-fits-all, bureaucratic approach to our health care system isn't working for too many American families and the problems are only going to get worse. This federally-mandated health care system has even cut Medicare by $700 million in order to pay for other federal health programs, and cut the Medicare Advantage program by $156 billion. Real problems with our current health care system exist - and even the president has recognized this.

In Congress, I am working hard for the people of Iowa's Third Congressional District, my bosses, to strengthen health care and give folks in Iowa and across the country greater choice when it comes to the health of their families. I have voted to repeal the ACA health care law in order to replace it with patient-centered solutions which create greater choices, and which are truly affordable.
