Congressman David B. McKinley, P.E., (WV-1) announced that West Virginia University will receive a Brookwood-Sago grant from the U.S. Department of Labor in the amount of $171,805 to support mine rescue and emergency preparedness for underground mines.

"Our miners risk their lives every single day to help power America and we need to make sure their safety remains one of our highest priorities. This grant will strengthen mine rescue training operations so that our emergency personnel are better prepared and have the tools they need to respond in the event of a crisis," said McKinley.

Background on Brookwood-Sago Grants

The Brookwood-Sago grant program was established under the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 to promote mine safety in honor of the 25 men who died in Brookwood, Alabama in 2001 at the Jim Walter Resources #5 mine, and the Sago Mine in Buchannon, West Virginia in 2006.
