I will always protect Social Security and ensure that our government keeps the promises it has made to current retirees and those planning to retire. This is my top priority with regards to Social Security.

When Social Security was signed into law during the Great Depression, it was intended to assist older Americans with leaving the workforce to allow for younger Americans to find jobs more easily. Unfortunately, Social Security has become another casualty of our broken system, affecting those Americans who need it most.

From the time the law was originally enacted in 1935 to present day, the needs of the markets have changed. This means that for my generation and future generations of workers, past promises may not be feasible. While I plan to uphold the Government's promises to current retirees and those planning to retire, I also recognize that an update to our Social Security system is strongly needed in order to protect all generations of American workers.

In order to accomplish difficult objectives in times of crisis, we must work together, and I will be a leading voice for addressing the critical issue of Social Security. I also believe that every good leader must also listen, and I welcome the opportunity to listen to my colleagues, as we exchange ideas about updating Social Security to benefit my constituents and all Americans. I will work with all of my fellow members of Congress to ensure that Social Security continues to be safeguarded.
