Congressman Biggs' Statement on Private Manning's Commutation

Statement

Date: Jan. 18, 2017

Congressman Andy Biggs issued the following statement after President Obama commuted the sentence of Private Manning:

"Over the objections of his own Secretary of Defense, President Obama made the decision yesterday to commute the sentence of Private Manning, a former solider convicted of stealing and disseminating almost one million pages of documents and videos. This is yet another example of President Obama's reckless disregard for the rule of law and American security. A Commander in Chief should never minimize nor incentivize the traitorous actions of people entrusted to keep our country's secrets. Private Manning deserved to serve the full sentence in prison and I am extremely disappointed in the message this sends to the rest of the world."
