Congressman Young Champions Bill Requiring Members of Congress to Live Under the Same Healthcare Laws as Every Other American

Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation which would prevent Members of Congress from exempting themselves from any federal healthcare legislation. Iowa Congressman David Young has been working to champion the bill's passage.

Concerns were recently raised that members of Congress and their staff would possibly be exempt from waivers from the Affordable Care Act's provisions in order to comply with U.S. Senate rules and procedures. This bill fixes the problem and ensures any changes made to federal healthcare laws also apply to members of Congress and their staff.

"Like many Iowans, I believe it is a fundamental principle of fairness for Congress and the President to live under the same rules and laws they create for the rest of the country," said Congressman David Young. "It was this fundamental principle of fairness that guided my first piece of legislation in 2015 and led to me championing this bill in the U.S. House of Representatives."

The first piece of legislation Congressman Young introduced after his first election to Congress was H. Res. 250 which states "Congress should pass no law that would exempt or provide any other special consideration to elected or appointed Federal officials or any other Federal employee." Congressman Young also reintroduced this legislation in the current 115th Congress.

The simple two paragraph bill approved today states members of Congress and their staff must live within the same healthcare system of those they represent.
