House Votes to Ban Taxpayer-Funded Abortions

Statement

Date: Jan. 24, 2017

Today the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 7 - the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act of 2017.

This bill would effectively ban the use of federal dollars to pay for abortions while also prohibiting federal facilities from providing abortions.

Upon passage of H.R. 7 just days after the 44th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, Rep. Garrett issued the following statement:

"Today, I was proud to cast my vote in defense of those among us who are the most defenseless. One of our most fundamental rights as humans is the right to life and as such, our government should not be subsidizing abortion - and H.R. 7 ensures that will no longer be the case. I look forward to my colleagues in the Senate following suit in passing this legislation."

Similar legislation passed the House in 2015 but did not make it out of the U.S. Senate.
