Trump Administration Secures Release of UVA Student

Press Release

Date: June 14, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

Last night, Mr. Otto Warmbier, an American citizen and student of the University of Virginia, returned to U.S. soil by way of a Medivac flight. Mr. Warmbier was arrested by the North Korean government and sentenced to 15 years in prison with hard labor in March of 2016.

Upon his return to the United States late last night, Representative Tom Garrett (VA-05) released the following statement:

"The details surrounding Otto Warmbier's confinement continue to weigh on the hearts and minds of Virginia's Fifth District. While grateful for his release, I remain concerned with his health and well-being. I am skeptical of the circumstances under which he reached his present condition, and I pray for a full recovery in what is sure to be a long process."

Garrett went on to say, "North Korea is among the most heinous actors on the global stage. The case of Mr. Warmbier reminds us of the barbarism of the North Korean regime. Any nation that subjects men, women, and children to this sort of unjust treatment must not only face condemnation, but active resistance from all who value basic human rights. The liberties of American citizens remain the highest priority in our policy making and foreign engagement. Otto's experience demands attention and I am thankful this Administration has secured his return. I look forward to hearing positive news about Otto's recovery and I hope the entire Warmbier family can find peace during the coming weeks."

Representative Garrett is a member of the House Committees on Foreign Affairs, Homeland Security, and Education and the Workforce. He represents the Fifth District of Virginia, home to Charlottesville and the University of Virginia.
