Congressman Garrett Commends Senate Leadership on Delaying August Recess

Statement

Date: July 11, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

Today Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced the United States Senate will be delaying the annual five-week recess in August.

Virginia's Fifth District Congressman Tom Garrett has repeatedly called for the House to continue the people's work in Washington through the summer recess until members fulfill the promises made to voters. In June, the conservative House Freedom Caucus, of which Garrett is a member, took an official position backing such a measure.

In response to today's announcement by Leader McConnell, Garrett issued the following statement:

"I applaud Senate Leadership on taking a rare approach to fulfilling our promise to the American people. The current healthcare system is unsustainable, small businesses and working families are relying on tax reform, and our national defense needs immediate improvement. I am proud to have stood alongside my colleagues weeks ago calling for a cancellation of the August recess and it is my hope that House leadership will follow suit."

The Senate also has the unique distinction of confirming Presidential appointees - an ongoing issue throughout the first six months of the 115th Congress.
