Tax Dollars Should Not Fund Abortions

Congressman David B. McKinley, P.E., (WV-1) issued the following statement after co-sponsoring and voting for the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, legislation that will prevent federal tax dollars from being used to fund abortions. Congressman McKinley has sponsored or supported similar legislation in 2011, 2013, and 2015.

"It is completely unacceptable to use the tax dollars of hardworking Americans to fund abortions and today, the House took a very important step towards protecting and promoting the sanctity of life. As a father and grandfather, I know this bill will help protect many unborn children while respecting the personal convictions of taxpayers all across the country," said McKinley.

"As an original co-sponsor of this legislation, I am proud to see it pass with strong support. Now it's time for the Senate to send it to President Trump so he can sign it into law," McKinley said.

Background on the Hyde Amendment and No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act (H.R. 7)

· The Hyde Amendment protects tax dollars taxpayer dollars from being used to fund most abortions and abortion coverage through Medicaid. It has to be renewed annually and only covers funds appropriated through Labor and Health and Human Services Appropriations bills.

· The No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act (H.R. 7) makes the Hyde Amendment permanent and other current abortion funding prohibitions permanent and government wide.

· Ensures that the Affordable Care Act (ACA) conforms to the Hyde Amendment until it is fully repealed and replaced.
