Congressman Brown Tours Goddard Space Flight Center, Urges Sustained Funding

On Tuesday, Congressman Anthony G. Brown (MD-04) visited Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) where he received a briefing on the GSFC's operations, toured the Robotic Operations Center, and viewed the assembly of the James Webb Space Telescope - a project that will continue the United States' leadership in astronomy. Almost 4,500 GSFC employees reside in Prince George's and Anne Arundel Counties. Congressman Brown was joined on his visit by Goddard Center Director Chris Scolese and GSFC employees.

"I am impressed by the world-class scientific research done at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, which increases our understanding of the Earth and tries to answer some of our universe's greatest questions," said Congressman Brown. "NASA Goddard employees have demonstrated a commitment to innovate and develop cutting-edge solutions and foster public-private partnerships. These breakthroughs stimulate economic growth and enhance education and workforce development opportunities. While I strongly supported the bipartisan NASA Transition Authorization Act that was signed into law, I am troubled that the Trump Administration's budget proposal would cut key Goddard activities in earth science, heliophysics and planetary science that allow us to better study the environment, model climate change and mitigate potential negative impacts on modern society. I will fight to restore these funds.

"NASA Goddard is continuously advancing STEM education and strengthening the workforce pipeline in Maryland. Almost 100 area students participate in intensive internships conducting hands-on research and engineering. Local students are paired with a NASA mentor to prepare and motivate them. NASA Goddard also partners with local high schools - including Duval, North County and South River - to support STEM curriculum, encourage women and minorities to pursue careers in technology and science, and provide professional development for teachers.
