Statement

Today, Congresswoman Jacky Rosen (NV-03) released the following statement after H.R. 931, the Firefighter Cancer Registry Act, of which she is a co-sponsor, passed the House. This bipartisan legislation establishes a cancer registry for our nation's heroes:

"Every day, our nation's firefighters risk their lives so they can save others. Researchers have found links to increased cancer rates among those in the line of duty. As the great granddaughter and grandniece of firefighters, I know very well the health risks our nation's heroes face. That's why I am proud to see this bipartisan bill I helped sponsor pass the House. This legislation will provide vital information to help cancer research efforts so we can better prepare and protect our heroes in Nevada and across the country from the dangers they face while protecting our communities."

BACKGROUND: H.R. 931, The Firefighter Cancer Registry Act, introduced by Rep. Chris Collins (R-NY) requires the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to develop and maintain a voluntary registry of firefighters to collect history and occupational information that can be linked to existing data in state cancer registries. The registry must be used to improve monitoring of cancer among firefighters and to collect and publish epidemiological information regarding cancer among firefighters.
