Rep. Deutch Statement on Republican Tax Scam Conference Report

Statement

Congressman Ted Deutch (FL-22) issued this statement after voting against the Republican Tax Conference Report, which will give 83 percent of tax cuts to the wealthiest 1 percent of Americans while raising taxes on 86 million middle-class families:

"Congressional Republicans have turned their backs on the American people, who overwhelmingly oppose this devastating scam. This bill sends a clear message to their constituents that they would rather bend the system in favor of lobbyists, donors, and corporate executives than strengthen seniors and middle-class families. Despite their promises, there's no great tax simplification or benefit for middle-class Americans. This is a massive, permanent giveaway to the largest corporations, encouraging them to ship more American jobs overseas, while short-changing middle-class families with limited temporary breaks and raising taxes on 86 million American households.

"There's no magic math here; adding over $2 trillion to the national debt will force automatic cuts to Medicare and give Republicans cover to attempt to gut Social Security and other vital programs in the future. Republicans would rather satisfy campaign promises using false -- and disproven -- promises of economic growth than sit down with Democrats and tax experts on a comprehensive, bipartisan proposal.

"My colleagues haven't learned from the last time they tried to pass an unpopular bill - Trumpcare - that the American people expect them to put country over politics. Our job is to strengthen our country and improve the lives of the American people and help them succeed. Taking away healthcare and adding scores of additional giveaways to lobbyists in a tax code already stacked for the special interests clearly fails this test. I voted no."
