Montana Congressman Greg Gianforte voted today for two bills to reform how the IRS treats taxpayers.

"These reforms clean up Washington by prioritizing taxpayers ahead of bureaucrats at the IRS," Gianforte said. "After the first major tax reform in 30 years, it just makes sense that we should overhaul the IRS, too, and put taxpayers first."

The Taxpayer First Act, H.R. 5444, overhauls the IRS for the first time in about two decades. The bill restructures the agency with an emphasis on improved customer service. The legislation shifts the burden of proof onto the IRS when it investigates taxpayers, and creates an independent review process to ensure taxpayers receive a fair and impartial review of disputes with the IRS. The measure passed the House 414-0.

The 21st Century IRS Act, H.R. 5445, updates the agency's technology, enhances its cybersecurity, and streamlines the agency's system for resolving cases of taxpayer identity theft. The legislation passed the House 413-3.

Gianforte has been focused on ensuring the IRS puts taxpayers first and provides quality customer service. At a recent congressional hearing, Gianforte questioned the IRS commissioner about accountability within the agency for how it serves taxpayers, and urged the commissioner to focus on improving customer service.

Gianforte voted in December for the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, the first major reform of the federal tax code in more than 30 years. The new tax law cuts tax rates for all taxpayers, expands the standard deduction, doubles the child tax credit, and provides needed relief to Montana's small businesses.
