Statement

Location: Washington, DC

Today, President Donald Trump announced that the United States is withdrawing from the Iran Nuclear Agreement -- otherwise known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Congressman Biggs issued the following statement:

"President Trump continues to honor his promises to put America first with today's decision to withdraw from the JCPOA. The Trump White House has made a coherent case for why it is not in the best interest of the United States to continue with the JCPOA. Particularly, Iran remains the State Department's leading state sponsor of terrorism. Just last year, the State Department's acting coordinator for counterterrorism stated that "Iran is the leading state sponsor of terrorism.' U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis recently referred to Iran as the "biggest state sponsor of terrorism.'

"In his speech today, President Trump expressed empathy for the Iranian people, whose great heritage has been suppressed by the ruling regime of Iran. As we go forward, I believe President Trump will forge an agreement that will benefit the United States, our allies (including Israel), and the people of Iran. I applaud President Trump for his convictions and leadership to protect America's interests."
