Letter to the Honorable Kevin Brady, Chairman of House Ways and Means Committee - Explain Trade Policies

Letter

Today, on the heels of the Trump Administration's announcement that it is preparing to impose tariffs on another $200 billion of imports from China, Ways & Means Committee Ranking Member Richard Neal (D-MA) and all committee Democrats called on Chairman Kevin Brady (R-TX) to bring Administration representatives before the full committee to explain its erratic tariff policies and their impact on America's workers, farmers, ranchers, and families.

In their letter to Chairman Brady, the members noted that in response to the Trump Administration's imposition of tariffs on more than $80 billion of imports, "America's trading partners have imposed their own tariffs on nearly $60 billion of U.S. exports, with a focus on hitting U.S. agriculture hard." The members also pointed out that "America's allies and competitors are also banding together to formally challenge the U.S. tariffs at the World Trade Organization," and that "last week, Reuters reported that China is actively making overtures to the EU to stand together against the Trump Administration's trade policies."

"With the proliferation and escalation of tariffs, the U.S. economy and the global economy are on edge," the members cautioned. "We cannot pretend that this is business as usual. The Administration owes answers to the Members of the Ways and Means Committee and, more importantly, to the American people about its trade policy goals and whether or not they are working."
