Rep. Lujan Grisham Cosponsors 3D-Printed Firearm Legislation

U.S. Representative Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01) co-sponsored the Untraceable Firearms Act of 2018 (H.R. 6643), which would help prevent felons, domestic abusers, and terrorists, from obtaining 3D-printed "ghost guns" that are untraceable and not subject to the background check system. Ghost guns refer to 3D-printed and do-it-yourself guns that are assembled from parts ordered online.

"The State Department's reckless decision to approve the release of blueprints for 3D-printable firearms puts Americans at risk, regardless of that decision being temporarily blocked by a federal judge," says Rep. Lujan Grisham. "This dangerous development jeopardizes the rights of families to live without the fear of gun violence in their communities. We must immediately pass the Untraceable Firearms Act to ensure that "ghost firearms" do not make it into the hands of dangerous criminals and that law enforcement has the tools they need to protect the public."

The bill would prohibit the manufacture and sale of firearms without serial numbers so they are traceable by law enforcement; ensure that 3D-printed firearm purchasers undergo a background check; and ban the 3D printing of all-plastic firearms that are undetectable through security checkpoints.
