Issue Position: Job Creation and Economic Development

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2020

South Texas is growing rapidly, with over 700 children born every month in Edinburg alone. It is important to make sure that current and future generations have access to good, well-paid jobs.

I worked hard during the 2013 session to pass HB 1000, which saw the creation of the first medical school in South Texas and the merger of the University of Texas-Pan American and the University of Texas Brownsville. Building a medical school in the Rio Grande Valley will create hundreds of jobs in Hidalgo County. Furthermore, the new university will help create a skilled workforce that can bring permanent, well-paying jobs to our district

I recognize that small businesses are what fuels Texas' economic growth. Owning my own small law firm has taught me the hard work required to run a small business.

South Texans know the meaning of entrepreneurialism. Small and family-owned businesses are the unsung heroes of our economy. As State Representative, I'll fight to:

Protect small business exemptions on the margins tax.
Support Buy Local/Buy Texas mandates
Oppose tax breaks to out-of-state businesses that are not offered to
Texas businesses.
Help support Representative Canales job creation and economic development efforts.
