Over the past several years, I could not have been prouder to watch Howard and Carroll County schools blossom into some of the best in the nation. We are truly blessed to have these schools in our communities, giving our children a great start to take advantage of life's best opportunities. After all, education is the key to a prosperous future for both the individual and society as a whole.

The unfortunate reality is that not everyone can afford to live in our communities, and yet everyone deserves the best possible head start in life. Too many people are being left behind because they do not have the wherewithal to move to where the good schools are. That is why I strongly believe education should not be zip code dependent. Above all else, parents need to have every tool at their disposal to make the critical choices regarding their child's education.

As a former teacher, I am proud to have sponsored education reform legislation that empowers parents and evaluates the quality of education based on results rather than dollars spent. I have also successfully worked to foster bipartisan dialogues among State leaders on education innovation so Maryland's children remain the best and brightest in the nation.

No child should fear for their safety while in school, and no parent should have to fear for their child's safety when they send them to school. During this most recent legislative session, I led an effort to ensure that our schools would have the resources necessary to keep students safe, and I was proud to support comprehensive legislation that will improve the safety of Maryland's schools.
