Extreme Cold Across the Midwest Reaffirms the Necessity of Baseload Power Supply

Statement

Congressman Larry Bucshon, M.D. (IN-08) released the following statement in response to energy providers across the Midwest asking their customers to turn down thermostats to avoid energy shortages during this polar vortex event:

"The extreme cold sweeping across the Midwest has created a dangerous and life-threatening situation. With temperatures dipping well below zero and freezing winds making it dangerous to even venture outdoors, Americans must remain indoors to stay safe. During times like these, when energy providers and government officials are urging industrial business customers to reduce their production, and for families to turn down their heat to reduce their use of energy due to a shortage of natural gas, we are reminded of the importance of ensuring there is access to diverse mix of energy sources, including coal, to provide life-saving energy and heat to our citizens. In fact, grid operators like PJM and MISO continued to rely more on coal than any other electricity source during the January 30-31 polar vortex when temperatures reached record-breaking lows. An unreliable and non-resilient electrical grid that cannot meet all the energy needs of Americans and our economy not only puts consumers' safety at risk, but it also puts our national security in jeopardy."
