Casten Statement Concerning Supreme Court Temporarily Allowing Administration's Ban on Transgender Americans Serving in the Military

Statement

Date: Jan. 22, 2019
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Representative Sean Casten (IL-06) issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court's decision in a 5-4 vote that temporarily allows the Trump Administration's policy of banning transgender Americans from serving in the military.

Casten said, "The banning of transgender Americans from serving in our armed services is not only un-American it is discrimination at the expense of military readiness. It punishes brave people who proudly put their lives on the line to protect our country. And, even more disturbingly, it tramples on the Constitutional rights of individuals who are putting themselves in harm's way to preserve the rights of all citizens. The military has long been at the forefront of promoting civil rights and advancing equality. I hope that the ban is ultimately and soundly overturned."
