Feinstein, Murkowski Introduce Women's History Month Resolution

Statement

Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) introduced a resolution designating March as "National Women's History Month."

"Women's History Month gives us an opportunity to reflect on the contributions women have made to our country and inspire the next generation of women leaders," Senator Feinstein said. "When I first came to the Senate, there were only two other women serving in the chamber. Today, a quarter of the senators are women and a record number of women are now serving in the House, including Speaker Pelosi, the only woman to have served as speaker. I'm proud of the tremendous progress we've made and hopeful we'll continue to build on that momentum toward full equality."

"From public service and education to government, innovation, and the humanities--women play a significant role in shaping the world we live in," said Senator Murkowski. "For Alaska, the names of so many strong, intelligent leaders come to mind: Elizabeth Peratrovich, who fought tirelessly for Civil Rights; Tikasuk "Emily' Brown, a champion for the preservation of Alaska Native culture and language; Ellen Cashman, one of Alaska's original female entrepreneurs--the list goes on and on. I encourage everyone to take time to celebrate the women whose contributions throughout history helped shape this great nation, and to acknowledge those who continue to build a brighter future for each of us, today."

In addition to Senators Feinstein and Murkowski, the resolution is cosponsored by Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Tina Smith (D-Minn.), Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii), Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.), Patty Murray (D-Wash.), Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), Chris Coons (D-Del.), Ed Markey (D-Mass.), Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Doug Jones (D-Ala.), Tom Carper (D-Del.), Jack Reed (D-R.I.), Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), Tom Udall (D-N.M.), Tim Kaine (D-Va.), Gary Peters (D-Mich.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Angus King (I-Maine), Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), Bob Casey (D-Pa.) and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.).
