Congressman Guest's Statement on National Emergency Vote

Statement

Date: Feb. 26, 2019
Location: Washington, DC

Tonight, Congressman Michael Guest (MS-03) voted against H.J. Res. 46, the resolution that would terminate the National Emergency declared by President Trump on January 15, 2019. United States Presidents were given the authority to declare a national emergency in the 1976 National Emergencies Act (NEA). Since its inception, 58 national emergencies have been declared under the NEA, and 31 of those are still in effect today.

After reviewing the laws and precedent surrounding this issue, Congressman Guest concluded that the current crisis at the southern border constitutes a national emergency that threatens the security of our nation. "Our southwest border remains the primary entry point of heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine coming into our county. Furthermore, the combination of unlawful migration and the inability to detain and process illegal aliens properly has created a national emergency on our southwest border. President Trump acted within the rights granted to him as President in the Constitution and through the National Emergencies Act to address the crisis that exists on our border, and I see no reason to terminate the lawful declaration of a national emergency," Congressman Guest said.
