Violence Against Women Act

Press Release

Date: March 5, 2019
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Women

Hoosiers,

An astounding 92% of homeless women have experienced severe physical or sexual violence, while almost 50% of all homeless women report that domestic violence was the immediate cause of their homelessness.

Domestic violence is a real and terrifying threat across the country, and access to safe and affordable housing for domestic violence victims must extend to all communities, including rural areas like ours in Indiana. Currently, upwards of 25% of women in rural areas live more than 40 miles from programs that can provide assistance.

This is why I joined my colleagues on both sides of the aisle in introducing the Violence Against Women Act Protections for Rural Women Act of 2019.

This bipartisan legislation helps victims of domestic violence in all communities by expanding their protections in affordable housing, helping free women from the cycle of domestic abuse.
