Congressman Cleaver's Statement On The Passing of Elijah Cummings

Statement

Date: Oct. 17, 2019
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, II (D-MO) released the following statement regarding the death of Congressman Elijah Cummings:

"The City of Baltimore and the people of this nation awake today to the loss of a giant amongst men. Elijah Cummings was a defender of democracy, a champion of human rights, and an unwavering advocate for equality. He was a kind and genuine man that fought every day to improve the lives of the American people, especially the most vulnerable among us.

Elijah will be remembered as a model of courage. As defined by the life of Elijah Cummings, courage was showing up and doing his job when there was little strength to do anything more than just showing up. I had the privilege and honor of calling Elijah my friend and I will miss him dearly. The City of Baltimore took a hit; The Democratic Caucus took a hit; Black America took a hit this morning."

Emanuel Cleaver, II is the U.S. Representative for Missouri's Fifth Congressional District, which includes Kansas City, Independence, Lee's Summit, Raytown, Grandview, Sugar Creek, Blue Springs, Grain Valley, Oak Grove, North Kansas City, Gladstone, Claycomo, and all of Ray, Lafayette, and Saline Counties. He is a member of the exclusive House Financial Services Committee; Chairman of the House Subcommittee on National Security, International Development, and Monetary Policy; member of the Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress; member of the Committee on Homeland Security; and a Senior Whip of the Democratic Caucus.
