Congressman Glenn Grothman (R-Glenbeulah) today released the following statement upon news of failed U.S. Senate nominee and current Democratic presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke's comments that religious institutions should be punished by taking away their tax-exempt status if they believe in traditional marriage.

"Comments made by Beto O'Rourke last Thursday should be a wakeup call for all church-going Americans," said Grothman. "Democratic presidential hopeful, Beto O'Rourke, has shown the Democratic party's true colors with these remarks, and just as concerning as the position itself is the paucity of spoken opposition among the political class to the government picking winners and losers when it comes to religion.

In the past, some clergy chose to forego their tax-exempt status, and, at the time, they were considered extreme. Now, the Democratic party seems entirely willing to make this idea universal in pursuit of impinging their ideology on all Americans.

Clergy, and all groups who have been granted tax-exempt status, should be mindful of how mainstream it's becoming to have the government enforce penalties in order to advance an agenda."
