Congressman Kelly Armstrong Announces Service Academy Nominations

Statement

Congressman Kelly Armstrong announced today that he has nominated three North Dakotans to the U.S. service academies: Gavin Sunderland of Fargo to the U.S. Air Force Academy; Hunter Baer of Garrison to the U.S. Naval Academy; and Joshua Seibel of Harvey to the U.S. Military Academy.

"Gavin, Hunter, and Joshua have answered the call to serve our country, and I couldn't be more proud to nominate them to the service academies," said Armstrong (R, N.D.). "As their journey to become the future leaders of our armed services begins, I join their family, friends, neighbors, and all North Dakotans in thanking them and wishing them the best."

Gavin Sunderland, Fargo -- U.S. Air Force Academy
Gavin is a senior at Oak Grove Lutheran High School in Fargo. His extracurricular activities include captain of the cross-country team and the trap shooting team, president of the Philanthropy and Youth Club, a delegate for North Dakota Boys State, and participating in hockey. He was inducted into the National Honors Society and has maintained a 3.97 grade point average.

Hunter Baer, Garrison -- U.S. Naval Academy
Hunter graduated from Garrison High School in Garrison in May with a 3.80 grade point average and is currently attending Dakota State University in Madison, South Dakota, where he participates in the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps and the student senate. His high school extracurricular activities included class and student body president, vice president of Garrison chapter of Future Farmers of America (FFA), state champion in two separate events in speech, a delegate and counselor for North Dakota Boys State, and competing in cross-country.

Joshua Seibel, Harvey -- U.S. Military Academy
Joshua graduated from Harvey High School in Harvey in May with a 3.54 grade point average and is currently attending the University of North Dakota (UND), where he participates in the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps and the UND band. His high school extracurricular activities included achieving the rank of Eagle Scout, being inducted into the National Honors Society, and participating in sprinting, cross-country, FFA, and Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA).

The service academies other than the U.S. Coast Guard Academy require a nomination from their U.S. Representative, one of their U.S. Senators, or the Vice President of the United States to attend. Armstrong has nominated these three individuals to the respective academy, and each academy admission board will determine final appointments.
