Rush Votes in Support of the United States--Mexico--Canada Agreement (USMCA) Implementation Act

Statement

Date: Dec. 19, 2019
Location: Washington D.C.
Issues: Trade

Today, U.S. Representative Bobby L. Rush voted in support of H.R. 5430, the United States--Mexico--Canada Agreement (USMCA) Implementation Act, which includes a series of transformative improvements to the Trump Administration's USMCA as originally proposed and will set a new floor for standards in future U.S. trade agreements.

"Illinois depends on our reciprocal trading relationship with Canada and Mexico, which supports almost half a million jobs in Illinois. However, I have also seen the damage wrought by well-meaning free trade agreements, such as NAFTA, that have caused many well-paying jobs to leave my district. That is why I am pleased to see the implementation of the USMCA, which includes key provisions secured by House Democrats.

"In particular, this trade agreement will create a new labor enforcement mechanism that protects workers' rights and holds non-compliant actors accountable, as well as a new customs verification mechanism to make sure that our trading partners are complying with international environmental agreements. These provisions were conspicuously absent from the original USMCA proposed by the Trump Administration but have since been included at the behest of this House of Representatives.

"This new and improved trade deal will support workers, protect the environment, and bring down prescription drug prices. With that said, this trade deal is but a first step in creating even stronger deals which benefit American workers," said Rush.
