Congressman Roger Williams (R-TX-25) today applauded passage of the President George H.W. Bush and First Spouse Barbara Bush Coin Act (S. 457), which would allow the United States Treasury to mint $1 coins memorializing the former President and First Lady. Congressman Williams introduced the House companion bill, H.R. 1173, with 27 co-sponsors from the Texas delegation.

"I am proud that the House of Representatives joined the Senate in passing this bill to honor two of the greatest patriots and devoted servants our nation has ever known. For those who knew the Bushes, their love for America was only surpassed by their commitment to family," said Rep. Williams. "President George H.W. Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush epitomized the very best of America -- and like their country, they were tough, strong, and kind. I am grateful for their friendship and their lasting legacy. Our world is better because of them."

United States Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) introduced S. 457 earlier in the 116th Congress. The bill was passed by the Senate on December 16, 2019.

"President George H.W. Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush are an example for all Texans of lives well lived in service to others," said Sen. Cornyn. "I am grateful to my colleagues in the House for advancing this legislation and look forward to the U.S. Mint issuing this reminder of their contributions to American history soon."
