FTC Consumer Alert Scams (COVID-19)

Statement

I want to take a moment and alert constituents to the fact that scam activity is on the rise. I know you are being overwhelmed with information coming out about how to get help if you (businesses, churches, individuals, seniors, schools, parents, students, and more) have been affected by COVID-19.

But be on HIGH ALERT that scammers are using COVID-19 messages to take advantage of the people. Visit the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Consumer Information page to file a complaint, sign-up to get email updates on scams, and to learn more about how to protect yourself. Here are some things to be on alert about.

If you get a call that you are not sure about whether or not it is legitimate either:
Hang up
Ask them for their call back number so you can call them back
Contact the FTC or the Mississippi Attorney General Office at (601) 359-3680.

Remember:
The federal government will not call you and ask for money
The federal government will not charge you to help you apply for any assistance
The federal government will not call and ask for your personal information, like your bank account, Social Security Number, or Medicare number.
